It can be difficult to define, but we know it when we see it.
Or do we?
Historically, folk art was regarded as art made in traditions like carving, sewing and imagery of “country” life. Artists with no formal training, some even isolated from art by factors like geography, poverty or obsession. So now we also struggle with terms like Outsider and Self-taught, but thankfully no longer “naive art.”
This is an exhibit of work by artists past and present who fit, sometimes loosely, into this genre.
